Beta Blockers
Beta blockers are a group of medicines that reduce the effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline on the heart and blood vessels. They work by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors, resulting in a slower heart rate, reduced force of heart contractions, and lower blood pressure. These effects decrease the heart's oxygen demand and improve cardiovascular function. Common beta blockers include atenolol, metoprolol, propranolol, bisoprolol, carvedilol, and nebivolol.
Beta blockers are widely used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), heart failure, irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), and after a heart attack to reduce the risk of future cardiac events. They are also prescribed for non-cardiac conditions such as migraine prevention, essential tremor, anxiety symptoms, hyperthyroidism, and glaucoma (in eye-drop form).
These medicines are usually taken orally once or twice daily, depending on the specific drug. Patients should take beta blockers regularly as prescribed and should not stop them suddenly because abrupt withdrawal may cause a rapid increase in heart rate, high blood pressure, or worsening chest pain.
Common side effects include tiredness, dizziness, cold hands and feet, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, sleep disturbances, and mild digestive upset. Some people may also experience reduced exercise tolerance or sexual dysfunction. Serious side effects are uncommon but may include severe slowing of the heart, worsening heart failure, or breathing difficulties, particularly in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Beta blockers should be used cautiously in patients with asthma, diabetes, severe peripheral vascular disease, or certain heart conduction disorders. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate is recommended during treatment. When used correctly under medical supervision, beta blockers are effective and well-established medications that improve symptoms, reduce complications, and increase survival in many cardiovascular conditions.
