Famotidine

 Famotidine

Famotidine is a medication that belongs to a group of drugs called histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonists or H2 blockers. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Famotidine is commonly prescribed to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and heartburn. It is also available over the counter in lower doses for the relief and prevention of occasional heartburn.

Famotidine works by blocking H2 receptors on the stomach's parietal cells. These receptors are normally stimulated by histamine to produce gastric acid. By blocking this action, famotidine decreases acid secretion, allowing ulcers to heal and reducing irritation of the stomach and esophagus.

The medication is available as tablets, oral suspension, and injectable formulations. It is usually taken once or twice daily, depending on the condition being treated. Patients should take the medicine exactly as prescribed and complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.

Common side effects of famotidine include headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue. These side effects are generally mild and temporary. Serious side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions, confusion (especially in older adults), irregular heartbeat, or severe skin reactions. Patients should seek medical attention if these occur.

Famotidine is generally well tolerated, but the dose may need adjustment in people with kidney disease because the drug is eliminated through the kidneys. It has fewer drug interactions than some other acid-reducing medications. Although it is considered safe for many patients, pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using it.

In summary, famotidine is an effective and widely used medication for reducing stomach acid and treating acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. When used correctly under medical supervision, it helps relieve symptoms, promotes healing of ulcers, and improves patients' quality of life.
